This Empire style king size bed dates from 1890 and follows a French chateau design vibe. The frame is constructed from painted timber finished in sage green with blue accent colouring, paired with woven cane panels on the headboard, footboard and side rails. Decorative elements include a pediment headboard with a central urn-shaped detail, turned column corner posts, and carved finials. The whole structure is held in its original paint finish, and has undergone light cleaning, checking and sympathetic restoration to ensure solid, sturdy construction and good assembly. The bed measures 144 cm high, 153 cm wide and 217 cm deep. In a modern interior, this piece serves as a central sleeping furniture item in a master bedroom. It accommodates a metric UK mattress measuring 150 cm by 200 cm, supported by wood slats or optional box bases for elevated height and superior support. The design suits period properties, country houses or bedrooms styled with traditional European furnishings, providing a classic focal point while maintaining historical character.

FAQs

Empire style furniture originated in the early nineteenth century during the reign of Napoleon I, drawing heavy inspiration from Greek, Roman, and Egyptian classical architecture. Common characteristics include symmetrical forms, prominent architectural pediments, fluted columns, carved finials, and painted or gilded timber finishes.

Traditional caned bedsteads were constructed using hardwood timber frames, such as beech, walnut, or mahogany, which were either left polished or painted. The woven panels were crafted using peeled rattan cane split into thin strands and hand-threaded through drilled holes in the timber framework.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-woven cane panels rather than pre-woven cane webbing sheets tacked into grooves. Look for mortise and tenon joinery, iron or timber side-rail bracket fittings, uneven hand-carved mouldings, and multiple layers of historical paint or natural surface patination.

A painted caned bed pairs well with crisp white or neutral linen bedding to highlight the intricate woven texture. Balance the ornate classical silhouette by styling the surrounding space with minimal bedside tables, understated table lamps, and neutral painted walls.

Woven cane requires periodic light hydration with a damp cloth to prevent the natural fibres from becoming brittle and drying out. Clean painted timber frames using a dry microfibre duster, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can strip or soften aged painted finishes.
