Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Art Nouveau fire screen dates from 1900 and functions as an ornamental hearth accessory. The piece comprises a tall, bevelled glass panel framed in warm gold-coloured brass, resting on splayed brass feet with scrolled terminal curls. The glass bears an etched botanical motif featuring stylized whiplash curves, complemented by a decorative openwork top handle with shell accents at the upper corners of the frame. Vertical brass supports and a curved base rail complete the structure. The brass displays a polished finish with subtle highlights, while the glass remains clear. The screen measures 81 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 20 cm deep, making it suitable for placement directly on a fireplace hearth to shield a room from warmth and embers when the grate is not actively in use. The slender footprint allows it to sit neatly against the chimney breast or wall beside the fireplace opening, adding a period accent to the interior space.

FAQs

Art Nouveau fire screens typically feature organic, sinuous lines inspired by natural forms such as plants and flowers, popular from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.

Period fire screens were commonly crafted using brass, wrought iron, or copper framing paired with bevelled glass, hand-embroidered textiles, or painted mirror panels.

Authentic period examples demonstrate characteristic whiplash curves, wheel-cut or etched glass details, and traditional period joining methods along the frame.

Position the screen directly in front of an unused fireplace opening to draw focus to the hearth, balancing the reflective glass against surrounding stone or timber finishes.

Clean glass panels with a microfibre cloth and mild glass cleaner, while gently removing dust from brass surfaces to preserve the natural aged patina.
