Description

Attributed to Young and (William) Trotter

The unusual form may be distinctively Scottish, there is a similar, albeit earlier example attributed to Alexander Peter in the collection of Dumfries House (lot 313 in the Christie's catalogue of the sale that never was).

The base is pretty sophisticated, with elegant, elongated scroll spandrels, cast, solid brass sabots and veneers to the drawer-linings to conceal the dovetails. The secondary timbers are pine and ash.

I'm intimately familiar with this piece of furniture- (it was one of the 'rostrums' at Phillips/Bonhams and possibly Dowells auctioneers at 65 George Street, Edinburgh) and I relied on it over the course of many years to prop me up!

For film and whisky enthusiasts, this was used in the famous (!) auction scene of Ken Loach's award winning film 'The Angel's Share'.

Size: 121cm x 71cm x 54cm

Reliable transport can be easily arranged at cost price, please let me know if you would like a quote, or have any other questions.

The George III period spans from 1760 to 1811, characterised by a refined blend of classical proportions, neoclassical influences, and exceptional cabinet-making craftsmanship, frequently utilising imported timbers such as mahogany.

Pieces from this era were constructed primarily from solid hardwoods and veneers like mahogany, often supported by secondary timbers like oak or pine, utilising traditional joinery such as dovetails and mortise and tenon frames.

Authenticity is determined by examining hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage patterns, period-appropriate brass hardware, tool marks consistent with hand-working, and the natural patina developed over centuries.

Positioning a period writing desk within a contemporary study or living room introduces textural contrast, acting as a focal point that grounds minimalist or transitional design schemes.

Preserve the finish by keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources, avoiding silicone-based polishes, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the wood.
