Tekke Wedding Rug, Circa 1880, 1.30m X 1.02m

19th century
Description

The Tekke were one of the largest nomadic tribes migrating in Central Asia, mainly in North-East Persia and Afghanistan. Their weavings are noted for their fine quality and deep colours usually in shades of red, terracotta and brown. Tekke Wedding Rugs have a special attraction. Woven for marriage ceremonies when the bride and groom would stand together at the moment of their betrothal, these rugs were often extremely finely woven, and cherished by the brides-to-be. Today, when they appear on the market they have many admirers. Their small square formats and subdued colours work very well in many decorative settings. This lovely piece is no exception. The mahogany field is decorated with three columns of Tekke guls and secondary ornaments in a very orderly and attractive way. The borders are equally pretty. Finely knotted and with soft velvety wool, this is a charming piece. In addition, it has even wear consistent with age to give it the elusive lived-in look. Professionally cleaned and in good condition.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Tekke Turkmen Rug to the 1880s.

This Central Asian tribal rug dates from 1880 and measures 130 cm high by 102 cm wide, offering a compact floor covering suitable for a study or library. Woven from soft wool, the piece displays a deep red mahogany ground arranged in a regular grid of octagonal Tekke gul motifs and secondary ornaments, bordered by geometric bands and finished with fringed ends in cream. The surface exhibits even wear consistent with age, alongside visible colour variations including tones of blue, terracotta, and brown within the woven patterns. The textile sits flat on a wooden floorboards surface, showing clean edges and dense knotting. Nomadic Central Asian weavers created these pieces for marriage ceremonies where couples stood together during betrothal rites. The structure combines a mahogany field with multi-coloured decorative panels at the top and bottom edges, secured by flat-woven selvages. Interior spaces benefit from its manageable proportions, fitting neatly beneath small tables, beside seating arrangements, or as a decorative accent rug in traditional and contemporary rooms alike. Professional cleaning maintains the condition while preserving the authentic lived-in appearance of the wool pile and woven borders.

Tekke Turkmen rugs are hand-knotted textiles traditionally woven by the Tekke tribe in Central Asia, recognized for their repeating octagonal gul patterns and deep red or liver-coloured fields.

These rugs are crafted using hand-spun wool for the warp, weft, and pile, constructed with tight knots that produce a dense and resilient surface.

Authentic late 19th-century examples feature natural vegetable dyes derived from madder and indigo, finely proportioned primary and secondary guls, flexible wool foundations, and natural age-related softening of the pile.

Tribal red rugs serve as grounding elements in traditional study spaces alongside dark timber furniture, or offer textural warmth within modern minimalist and eclectic schemes.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush bar, immediate spot-cleaning of spills with cold water, and periodic specialist dry cleaning preserve the wool fibres and natural dyes.
