Description

One of a group of Caucasian rugs known as 'Fachrolo Kazak' this rare piece dates to the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. It has several interesting features which suggest that it is a pre-commercial period weaving. The emerald green field is unusually narrow and is framed by two main borders. The ornaments in the central field are archaic and arranged in a quasi formal manner. The first main border is composed of halved stepped polygons and 'wine glasses' while the ivory outer border is composed of a repeating geometric ornament which resembles birds heads. It is an intriguing composition. All the dyes are superb, including the emerald green, reds, golds, and blues. There is also an organic burnt orange. While the rug is worn in places, the design reads well. A highly collectible early Caucasian rug.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Caucasian Rug to the 1870s.

Antique Caucasian rugs are characterised by bold geometric motifs, tribal iconography, and a rich palette of natural plant-derived dyes, typically woven by nomadic or village communities in the Caucasus region.

These rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the pile, warp, and weft, often featuring symmetrical or asymmetrical knots and finished with flatwoven ends and selvedges.

Authenticity is determined by examining the irregularity of hand-spun wool, natural colour variations known as abrash, hand-finished edges, and the specific structural characteristics of the foundation.

An antique rug brings texture and history to contemporary spaces, working effectively as a focal point on neutral hardwood floors or layered over larger sisal flooring to ground modern furniture.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional hand washing when necessary, keeping the rug out of direct sunlight, and using a breathable underlay to prevent friction.
