Khila Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

Khila in the region of Baku is known for this type of rug, the boteh Khila being the most recognisable of their production. They are rare pieces and a delight to behold. The weave is not particularly fine and on this one the drawing is delightfully clumsy in places but to me the overall effect is enchanting. The palette being so unusual for an oriental rug that it makes one wonder if these were made for the western market. The large boteh march to and fro across the field with the upper two appearing to have been abandoned at the most difficult point. Gold and light blue seem to dominate the overall appearance with the latter being so pure and fresh that my eye is drawn to the spandrels and main border where it is concentrated. I am always excited by these rare pieces that stand out from the crowd and demand your attention.

Fair conditon with quite a lot of corrosion to the black wool and areas of wear across the rug. I imagine the selvedges have been secured at some point.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Khila rugs originate from the Baku region in the Eastern Caucasus, recognised for their distinct geometric compositions and repeating boteh patterns woven in hand-spun wool.

These textiles are hand-knotted using natural wool pile on a wool or cotton foundation, coloured with vegetal and mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces feature hand-bound selvedges, slight colour variations known as abrash, flexible handles, and characteristic repeating boteh motifs framed by multi-stripe geometric borders.

A geometric Caucasian rug adds texture and visual depth when grounded against neutral timber flooring in contemporary living rooms, hallways, or studies.

Regular light vacuuming without a rotating beater bar, immediate spot treatment with cold water, and periodic professional cleaning ensure natural wool fibres remain intact.
