Daghestan Prayer Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

This is one of the classic designs, a Daghestan prayer rug with an allover lattice design filled with rich floral motifs. There is something very pleasing about this carefully drawn lattice, the variety of the well articulated flowers within each cell is mesmerising and their colours shine against the white ground. Note some of the details in mihrab including two combs and what appears to be writing. Note how the weaver decided to change the inner minor border at the bottom, it is so radically different I wonder if they decided it would be too difficult to execute in the vertical. However they seemed to have mastered everything else so perhaps it is just a design modification and a very welcome one. It gives more interest and makes the piece unique. The highlight for me is the dark mihrab snaking across the white ground with its jagged border.

Fair amount of wear and corrosion to the brown. There is some repiling on what looks like old crease lines. A thin but usable piece.

Date of Manufacture

Phil Bell Antique Rugs has dated this Caucasian Daghestan Prayer Rug to the 1900s.

This hand-knotted Daghestan prayer rug from 1900 displays a Caucasian style in wool, measuring 164 cm high and 117 cm wide. The ivory central field contains a geometric lattice pattern filled with red and blue floral rosettes, set beneath a blue mihrab arch with a jagged border and two comb motifs. The multi-banded red and blue border features repeating geometric elements and floral motifs, complemented by fringe along the ends. The piece shows a fair amount of wear and corrosion to the brown areas, along with repiling on old crease lines, resulting in a thin yet usable texture. Suitable for placement on the floor in a study or library, the rug brings traditional textile artistry to an interior space. The contrasting palette of ivory, red, and blue integrates easily with various decorative schemes while maintaining a classic aesthetic. The handmade construction provides a functional floor covering that reflects regional weaving traditions through its detailed iconography and compositional structure.

Daghestan prayer rugs originate from the northeastern Caucasus region and are characterised by a distinctive arched arch motif known as a mihrab, designed to orient towards Mecca during prayer.

These textiles are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the structural foundation, coloured using natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authentic examples feature a geometric lattice field, a defined mihrab arch, high knot density with all-wool construction, and natural abrash colour variations throughout the weave.

A small tribal rug can be mounted as decorative wall art, placed in an entryway, or layered over a neutral flatweave carpet in a living space.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a beater bar, rotate periodically to equalise wear, and address spills immediately by blotting with a clean, dry cloth.
