This 18th century Dutch Rococo serpentine commode is constructed from painted wood, oak and brass with a distressed pale grey paint finish. The chest of drawers features a four-drawer configuration with brass escutcheons, ornate drop handles, shaped bracket feet and traditional decorative mouldings along the top surface and base. Visible signs of age include chipped, worn and crackled paint across the entire exterior surfaces that exposes the timber underneath. The commode measures 84 cm high, 89 cm wide and 53 cm deep. Position this statement piece in a hallway, bedroom or living room as a practical storage chest with traditional character. The compact proportions allow it to fit neatly against a wall while offering four tiers of drawer storage for household items, linen or clothing.

An 18th-century Dutch serpentine commode features a distinctive undulating, S-curved front profile inspired by Continental Rococo designs. These storage pieces typically incorporate four long drawers, heavy timber construction, and decorative cast brass handles and keyhole escutcheons.

Commodes from this era were constructed using dense hardwoods such as oak or walnut, or softwoods like pine when intended for painted finishes. Hardware was cast from solid brass, while painted surfaces were achieved using milk-based or oil-based pigments applied directly over gesso or raw timber.

Authenticity is verified through construction hallmarks including hand-cut dovetail joints, thick hand-sawn secondary timbers on drawer bottoms and backs, and natural oxidisation around original brass fittings. Original painted finishes display age-appropriate craquelure, authentic rubbing along high points, and historic wear.

A painted serpentine commode serves as a focal piece when set against crisp contemporary backdrop walls or subtle panelling. Interior designers balance the aged texture of the finish by pairing the commode with modern lamps, architectural ceramics, or a framed contemporary artwork above the top surface.

Preserve distressed painted timber by maintaining a stable indoor relative humidity to prevent flaking or cracking of the historic paint layers. Light dusting with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth is recommended, avoiding liquid polishes, wax solvents, or harsh chemical cleaners.
