This eighteenth-century English delftware charger is a circular earthenware dish finished with a white tin glaze and hand-painted cobalt blue pigment. The central roundel displays a chinoiserie landscape featuring a weeping willow tree, a floral spray, a diaper pattern fence, and a hill, enclosed by concentric blue lines. The wide rim is decorated with four floral sprays and leaf motifs. Tiny chips on the outer rim reveal the earthenware body beneath the glaze, showing signs of age. Measuring 29.5 cm high, 29.5 cm wide, and 10 cm deep, the dish fits well on a sideboard top in a dining room or living space as a decorative wall or surface display piece.

English delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware manufactured in Britain during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Inspired by Dutch imports and imported Chinese porcelain, it features cobalt blue hand-painted decoration on an opaque lead-tin glaze.

These chargers were shaped from coarse earthenware clay and coated in a liquid lead glaze made opaque white by adding tin oxide. Artisans painted designs directly onto the damp glaze using mineral oxides before firing the ceramic in a kiln.

Authentic pieces frequently exhibit rim chipping, known as fritting, where the delicate tin glaze has flaked away to reveal the terracotta or buff clay beneath. They also feature subtle brushwork variations, pinholes in the glaze, and unglazed sections on the reverse rim.

Mount the charger on a plain wall as a focal decorative piece or display it vertically on a modern brass plate stand atop a sideboard. Combining traditional blue-and-white ceramics with clean-lined timber or marble surfaces creates a balanced contemporary aesthetic.

Dust the surface lightly with a dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush. Avoid soaking the piece in water or applying household detergents, as moisture can seep into cracks or porous areas and compromise the glaze structure.
