Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Edwardian oak purdonium coal box has a warm brown timber finish and stands on shaped feet. The piece features a raised upstand back with a floral carved gallery, side brass carrying handles, and a drop-front door secured with a decorative brass drop handle. Intricate foliate relief carving ornaments the central door panel, complemented by layered mouldings surrounding the front facade. Measuring 68.5 cm high, 35.5 cm wide, and 35.5 cm deep, this sturdy storage container is designed for daily domestic use. Placed beside a fireplace hearth in a traditional living room, study, or sitting area, the box holds fuel while serving as a functional accent piece in an English country house interior.

FAQs

During the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, coal purdoniums were decorative wooden cabinets designed to conceal coal or fuel near the fireplace, often featuring a slant front or drop-down door and a metal liner.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, fitted with brass or iron handles and traditionally fitted with a removable zinc or galvaised iron interior liner.

Authentic Edwardian examples often feature relief-carved floral or foliate panels, dovetail joinery, period-correct brass hardware, and age-consistent patination on the timber and interior surfaces.

Beyond traditional fireside use for storing logs or kindling, these carved wooden cabinets function well as side tables, hallway storage boxes, or standalone decorative accents in contemporary living areas.

Clean the carved wood surface regularly using a soft dry dust cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically while keeping the piece situated away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
