Ormolu chenets, or fire dogs, gained prominence in France during the 17th and 18th centuries, serving both functional and decorative purposes in grand hearths.

Traditional andirons are typically constructed from cast bronze or iron, frequently finished with mercury gilding, known as ormolu, to create a brilliant golden lustre.

Authenticity is determined by examining the chisel work, mercury gilding techniques, casting quality, and signs of period wear appropriate to the purported era.

These pieces can be placed within a working or decorative fireplace to anchor the room with classical symmetry and metallic texture.

Ormolu should be cleaned gently using a soft, dry cloth to remove dust, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can strip the delicate gold layer.
