This Chinese Export Imari large plate dates from the period 1800 to 1880 and takes the form of a circular porcelain charger. The surface displays hand-painted iron-red floral scrollwork, an underglaze blue diaper pattern, and a central medallion motif, accented by a beaded metal rim mount in white, blue, and red colours. The piece measures 30.5 cm high, 30.5 cm wide, and 3.8 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this item suits placement on a sideboard top to bring traditional English Country House character to a dining room or living space. It integrates well into existing decorative collections on display surfaces where its intricate glazed patterns and metal rim stand out clearly.

Chinese Imari porcelain refers to ceramics produced in China, primarily during the late 17th and 18th centuries, that adapted the colour palette and decorative style of Japanese Imari ware. These pieces were manufactured for export to Europe and featured a combination of underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron red, often accented with gilding.

Imari porcelain is constructed from kaolin clay and petuntse, firing to a hard, white vitrified body. The decoration utilises underglaze cobalt oxide for blue tones, applied before the initial high-temperature firing, followed by overglaze enamels such as iron oxide red applied during a second, lower-temperature kiln cycle.

Authentic Chinese Imari ceramics exhibit clear characteristics of hand-painted application, including slight variation in brushwork thickness and enamel depth. Chinese examples typically feature a whiter porcelain paste and thinner glaze application compared to Japanese Imari counterparts, alongside characteristic foot rim wear and historical kiln firing marks.

A large Imari charger can be displayed on a dark wood sideboard using an easel stand or arranged in a wall-mounted plate group against a neutral backdrop. The strong contrast of iron red and blue complements dark timber cabinetry, stone mantelpieces, and painted wall paneling.

Clean porcelain plates using lukewarm water and a mild non-abrasive soap applied with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, scouring pads, or dishwasher cleaning, as overglaze iron red enamels and added metal rims can degrade or sustain abrasion from abrasive handling.
