This late nineteenth century Japanese porcelain charger belongs to the Meiji period and displays a blue and white palette with a cobalt underglaze landscape. The central pastoral scene sits inside a scalloped medallion, enclosed by a bird and floral border featuring swallows and a geometric rim pattern. Signs of age include one small chip on the rim, and the high-gloss finish shows natural crazing across the glazed surface. It measures 36 cm high, 36 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, providing a substantial display piece. In a contemporary home, this decorative charger fits neatly onto a sideboard top within an English Country House interior. The circular ceramic dish works as a standalone accent piece or table centrepiece, adding traditional craftsmanship and historic character to living areas, dining rooms, or hallways.

A nineteenth-century Japanese charger is a large decorative porcelain platter, often created during the late Edo or Meiji periods for functional use or decorative display, frequently exported to Western markets.

These chargers were formed from high-fired porcelain clay and decorated with cobalt blue underglaze paint or transfer prints depicting traditional landscapes, floral elements, or bird motifs before being coated in a clear glaze.

Authenticity is assessed through signs of age such as slight firing imperfections, wear to the unglazed foot rim, underglaze blue characteristics, and potential maker marks or signatures on the base.

Interior designers display these chargers on plate stands atop sideboards, mount them on walls as focal points within gallery displays, or place them inside traditional glazed cabinetry.

Preserve blue and white porcelain by hand washing gently in warm water with mild detergent, avoiding abrasive pads, chemical cleaners, and dishwasher cycles to prevent glaze wear.
