This reproduction 'Starfish Dancer' figure dates from 1950 and follows the Art Deco style originally created by Demetre Chiparus. The sculpture is made from bronze, gilt bronze and enamel, with a green patination and gold details across the textured body. The female dancer wears a stylised cap, with raised clasped hands held high above her head in a pointed finial shape, while starfish patterns and beaded textures decorate her suit. The figure stands 68.5 cm high, 16 cm wide and 16 cm deep on a circular green marble base. In a contemporary home, this decorative sculpture suits placement on a sideboard top or display console in a living room or hallway. The bronze and gilt materials bring Art Deco glamour to an interior surface, while the intricate starfish motifs add texture and visual interest to the setting.

FAQs

Art Deco bronze figures are known for their theatrical poses, streamlined forms, and decorative costumes inspired by the Ballets Russes, cabaret performers, and exotic motifs popular during the interwar period.

These sculptures were cast using the lost-wax technique, after which layers of enamel, paint, or patination solutions were applied directly onto the cold bronze surface to create distinctive colour and texture contrast.

Authentic period castings typically display sharp detail in the metalwork, fine hand-finishing, foundry markings, maker signatures near the base, and substantial weight appropriate to solid bronze casting.

Place the figure on a dark marble console, polished sideboard, or mantelpiece to create a focal point, allowing the green patination and gilt highlights to contrast with neutral or dark backdrop surfaces.

Remove surface dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding moisture, solvents, or abrasive polishes that can stripping the original patination and gilt coating.
