A striking large Art Deco style patinated bronze sculpture after Demétre H. Chiparus, depicting an exotic female dancer in an expressive theatrical pose with both arms dramatically outstretched.

The figure is beautifully modelled with an elegant elongated stance, finely detailed facial features and elaborate Eastern-inspired costume. The dancer wears an ornate beaded bodice, decorative belt and cascading jewelled panel, together with detailed arm and ankle ornaments.

The sculpture displays a rich dark brown patina with attractive tonal variation and very good definition throughout the casting, particularly to the face, hands, jewellery and costume.

Raised on its original-style substantial stepped marble plinth, incorporating richly figured red and cream marble above a contrasting black marble base, giving the sculpture considerable decorative presence.

The bronze base is signed “D.H. Chiparus” and also carries a circular bronze guarantee/foundry medallion marked “Bronze Garanti” with additional lettering.

Chiparus is particularly associated with the celebrated theatrical and exotic dancers of the Art Deco period, and this sculpture follows that highly decorative tradition. His original period works are extensively documented as bronze-and-marble dancer figures, although examples such as this should be described conservatively as after Chiparus / Art Deco style unless period provenance can be established.

An impressive statement sculpture with excellent display presence, ideal for an Art Deco interior, collector’s cabinet or decorative setting.

Condition

Good vintage condition overall with light surface wear, marks and patination consistent with age.

The marble plinth shows expected natural veining, inclusions and minor edge/surface wear. No significant structural damage is apparent from the photographs.
