A substantial and highly decorative patinated bronze figural group after Georges Gori’s celebrated Art Deco composition, generally known as The Guardians or Élégante aux lévriers, depicting an elegantly dressed lady walking between two slender greyhounds.

The female figure is beautifully modelled in the Art Deco manner, wearing a long, flowing and closely fitted gown with dramatically flared sleeves and an unusual lattice-pattern headdress. Raised beaded ornament follows the neckline and contours of her costume, while the elongated proportions, elegant stance and sweeping folds of the dress capture the sophisticated aesthetic associated with French decorative sculpture of the 1920s and 1930s.

The lady holds the two hounds by delicate fine-link metal chains, terminating at small cast fittings held between her individually articulated fingers. These surviving chain leads are a particularly attractive detail of the composition.

The two elegant sighthounds are individually modelled with long slender legs, deep chests, tucked bodies and elongated heads, both looking upwards towards their mistress. Details include their collars, facial features and individually defined paws.

The group is cast in bronze and retains a rich dark brown to near-black patination, with attractive areas of green verdigris and surface variation particularly visible within protected recesses, around the collars, costume and folds of the dress. The patinated surface gives the sculpture considerable character and decorative presence.

The figures stand upon a naturalistically modelled integral bronze terrace, which is mounted upon a substantial shaped and polished black marble plinth with contrasting natural pale veining.

The composition derives from the work of Georges Gori, a sculptor associated with the French Art Deco period whose elegant female figures, frequently accompanied by greyhounds, epitomise the fashionable decorative sculpture of the era. Period versions of this composition are known in differing materials and sizes, including bronze and mixed-media examples mounted upon marble and onyx bases.

This example appears to be a later 20th-century bronze interpretation of the original Art Deco model and is therefore conservatively catalogued as “After Georges Gori” rather than represented as a signed period work by the artist.

A particularly impressive statement sculpture, combining the elegance of the Art Deco female form with the wonderfully elongated profiles of the two hounds. At approximately 50cm high and mounted upon its substantial black marble base, it has considerable presence and would make a striking centrepiece in either a traditional or contemporary interior.

Condition:

Very good decorative condition overall, with surface wear and oxidation commensurate with age and the nature of the material. Attractive dark patination with areas of green verdigris and surface variation throughout. Both fine chain leads are present. Minor marks and wear to the marble plinth consistent with age and use.
