This large late nineteenth century Neapolitan Grand Tour library bronze sculpture depicts the classical nude figure of Narcissus. Standing in a contrapposto stance upon a turned circular base with decorative mouldings, the dark brown polished patinated figure displays detailed hair curls and a goat skin shoulder strap over the left shoulder. The piece stands 48 cm high, 19 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. Designed for a gentleman's library, the sculpture sits appropriately upon a sideboard top, desk, or display cabinet within a traditional study, home office, or reception room. The heavy metal construction and classical neoclassical subject matter provide a scholarly accent to interior spaces, complementing wooden furniture and curated art collections.

A Grand Tour Neapolitan bronze is a scale metal replica of an ancient Roman or Greek statue, produced in Naples during the 18th and 19th centuries. These pieces were crafted for European aristocrats travelling on the Grand Tour as educational souvenirs commemorating classical antiquity.

Most Grand Tour bronzes were manufactured using the lost-wax casting technique, allowing for intricate detail in muscle rendering and drapery. After casting, foundry artists applied chemical patinas, ranging from deep brown to dark green, to simulate aged archaeological surface finishes.

Authentic 19th-century examples display sharp casting detail, hand-chased finishing work, and appropriate wear to the base and high points of the patina. Foundry marks or signatures from prominent Neapolitan workshops, such as Chiurazzi or Sommer, are also key identifiers.

Classical bronzes are typically placed on solid timber sideboards, marble mantelpieces, or structured shelving to create visual contrast against clean architectural lines. Their dark patina provides a grounded focal point when paired with muted wall shades and natural textures.

Bronze sculptures should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. To preserve the patina and prevent oxidisation, apply a thin coat of microcrystalline wax annually and buff gently with a clean cotton rag.
