Large Late C19th Italian Neapolitan ‘Grand Tour’ Souvenir Bronze Sculpture , After the Antique , of Dionysus Known Popularly as Narcissus.

19th century
For Sale by M Lees and Sons
Description

Large late C19th Italian Neapolitan ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir bronze sculpture, after the antique, of Dionysus, known popularly as Narcissus .

Neapolitan bronze casting probably by Chiurazzi foundry of the iconic bronze statue of Dionysus . The youthful god is depicted entirely naked except for a wine-skin slung over his shoulder , a grape-vine in his hair and wearing elaborate sandals, standing in a contrapposto pose . The circular base with a decorative cast edge of classical design.

This casting of the statue having been produced in a ‘faux excavation’ finish and patina, copying the antique original unearthed at Pompeii in 1862. The discovery was a sensation at the time and copies of this evocative bronze were highly sought after by collectors , classical scholars and ‘Grand Tourists’ alike . The image was thought to portray the subject admiring his reflection in a pool , hence the title Narcissus .

The Greek god Dionysus, known as Bacchus to the Romans , is the god of wine , the grape harvest, ritual madness and celebration.

The original bronze statue is now exhibited in the Museo Nazionale , Naples, Italy .

In excellent original condition with a dark green ‘faux excavation’ or ‘all’antica’ verdigris patination and surface.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Grand Tour bronze sculpture is a late 18th or 19th-century cast metal replica of an ancient Greek or Roman statue. These objects were purchased by travellers completing educational tours across continental Europe, particularly in Italy.

These sculptures were generally cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) method, which captured high levels of surface detail. They were finished with hand-applied patinations ranging from dark brown to green, and mounted on bronze or marble bases.

Authentic period pieces exhibit crisp hand-chased surface details, natural patination wear on raised areas, and substantial weight for solid metal casting. Look for early casting seams inside hollow bases and historic foundry stamps.

Place the sculpture on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or sturdy pedestal where directional light can highlight the dark patination and figurative outline. Pairing classical metalwork with neutral walls or minimalist cabinetry creates an effective visual contrast.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry cloth or a gentle natural-bristle brush. Avoid water, abrasive polishes, and chemical solvents, and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax annually to protect the dark patina.
