This 19th-century Grand Tour bronze figural model of a Neapolitan fisherman sits upon a square green veined marble base. The dark brown patinated bronze figure wears a hat and draped garment while seated on a rock, holding a rod and a small hanging basket over a fountain spout shaped like a grotesque mask. The sculpture stands 26.5 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 15 cm deep. Place this piece on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library or study to add classical nineteenth-century Italian style to a room. The dark bronze finish contrasts with the pale green and white tones of the marble block base, bringing historical decoration to a home interior.

Grand Tour bronzes are miniature or reduced-scale bronze reproductions of classical antiquities and regional figures created primarily during the 18th and 19th centuries. They were acquired by wealthy European aristocrats and travellers undertaking the Grand Tour across continental Europe, particularly Italy, as souvenirs of cultural education.

These sculptures were typically cast in solid or hollow bronze using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting technique. Following casting, foundry craftsmen hand-chased details into the metal and applied chemical patinas, often mounting the finished figures onto marble, porphyry, or stone plinths.

Authentic period bronzes exhibit detailed hand-chasing, crisp tool marks, and natural surface wear to the patina where handled over time. Additionally, period pieces display appropriate casting seams, historical weight, and traditional mounting methods to marble or slate bases using hand-cut threaded rods.

A Grand Tour bronze functions as a focal accent when placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive desk. Integrating historical bronzes alongside modern artwork, books, and architectural elements creates an eclectic, curatorial aesthetic within both classic and contemporary interiors.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding moisture or liquid chemical cleaners. To preserve the original patina and protect against oxidisation, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax once a year and buff lightly.
