153 X 209cm Antique Pinwheel Caucasian Rug

1920 - 1940
Description

Made in the Caucasian town of Erivan, this is a faithful copy of an older and highly desirable type of Kazak. probably made in the 1920-30's Erivan are renowned for reproducing famous rug designs. This one works well, with swastikas - or pinwheels- whizzing around between the green leaves. The animation so often gets lost in copies but this is pretty good, and of course a fraction of the price of a genuine pinwheel Kazak from the mid 19th century. Lovely wool quality, very soft and shiny and decent condition. I could repair the crease line and some of the wear if you so desire, it is not too expensive, something around £4-500 inc VAT

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1930s:
Regular hand-tied knots on the reverse: early 20th-century Caucasian workshop weaving.
Horizontal colour bands across the red ground: variations between dye batches.
Geometric pinwheel motifs: traditional styling modelled after mid-19th-century Kazak patterns.
Softened pile across the central field: honest wear from domestic foot traffic.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Caucasian rugs originate from the Caucasus region between the Black and Caspian Seas, renowned for their bold geometric patterns, vibrant dyes, and distinct tribal motifs.

These textiles are hand-knotted predominantly using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp and weft foundation, creating a durable and thick texture.

Authentic pieces feature hand-knotted wool construction, geometric patterns such as pinwheels or stars, natural dye variations known as abrash, and a flexible handle.

The geometric structure and rich colour palette of Caucasian rugs complement contemporary minimalist spaces, rustic wooden floors, or classic period studies.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a beater bar, rotate periodically to balance traffic wear, and clean spills immediately with cold water and a neutral detergent.
