Antique Caucasian with Lezghi Stars

19th century
For Sale by Siez Gallery
Description

This Caucasian rug is rich with artistic flair. Curly latched-hooks are a clever addition to the main border, whilst the zig-zag motifs transform into a row of flower heads on the top panel. The central field is characterised by a set of explosive Lezghi stars, as well as smaller rosettes and scorpions motifs, which incorporate the ivory, cerulean and red found on the borders. Despite not being perfectly symmetrical, this rug has a magical appeal that extends far beyond its physical imperfections.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Caucasian rugs originate from the Caucasus region between the Black and Caspian Seas. The Lezghi star motif is associated with the Lezgi people of Dagestan, featuring geometric eight-pointed stars that represent traditional tribal iconography and cosmic symbolism.

Traditional Caucasian rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the structural foundation. They feature natural vegetable dyes created from local plants, minerals, and insects, producing rich indigo blues, madder reds, and natural cream tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tied symmetrical or asymmetrical knots, slight dye variations known as abrash, and flexible wool foundations. They display distinct geometric patterns rather than floral curvilinear designs, often accompanied by braided or selvedge edge finishing.

A Caucasian rug provides focal visual grounding when placed over natural timber, stone, or polished concrete flooring. The bold geometric star patterns contrast effectively with clean-lined modern furniture, minimalist Scandinavian schemes, or traditional period interiors.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating motorised beater bar to avoid pulling the wool fibres. Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth, rotate the carpet annually to ensure even wear, and arrange professional hand-washing by a specialist textile conservator.
