Antique Jacobean Style Oak Bureau Bookcase | Leaded Glass Doors

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique early 20th century bureau bookcase in oak, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship in the Jacobean revival manner.

The upper section has a pair of leaded glass doors opening to two fixed shelves, ideal for books or displaying china. Below, the fall front opens to a writing surface and a fitted interior of pigeonholes around a small central drawer, over two long drawers with pierced brass drop handles.

The bureau stands on bold turned cup-and-cover front legs and square back legs, joined by a box stretcher.

The oak displays a stunning figured grain with lovely medullary ray flashes to the fall front, and a warm, rich colour with a lovely mellow patina.

The bookcase lifts off the bureau, so it comes apart in two sections for easier delivery and access. Presented in good condition commensurate with age. A very desirable bureau bookcase of compact proportions, a perfect addition to any study, hallway or living room.

This early 20th century bureau bookcase follows the Jacobean revival style, constructed from dark brown oak, glass, and brass. The upper section comprises a pair of leaded glass doors enclosing shelves, above a slant-front drop-down desk lid. Two long drawers below feature pierced brass drop handles and rest upon bulbous turned legs connected by stretchers. The timber exhibits a figured grain with medullary ray flashes on the fall front, whilst the hardware includes circular backplates behind the drop handles. The unit measures 183 cm high, 78 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. Suitable for use in a study, hallway, or living room, this two-section furniture item provides storage and display space for books and decorative objects. The removable upper bookcase allows for ease of placement within the home, while the lower writing desk supplies a surface for correspondence.

Jacobean style furniture originates from the early 17th-century reign of King James I of England, characterised by sturdy oak construction, dark finishes, and geometric turnings. Revival pieces from the late 19th and early 20th centuries reintroduced these features, combining practical storage with historic design elements.

Traditional bureau bookcases are constructed primarily from solid oak or walnut, featuring hand-fitted dovetail joints on drawers and leaded or plain glass panels in the upper doors. Metal drop handles or teardrop pulls are commonly fitted to the drawer fronts.

Look for turned bulbous legs connected by low stretchers, heavy dark-stained oak timber, and leaded glass panes set within wood frame doors. Authentic early 20th-century revival pieces display smooth drawer operation with hand-cut dovetailing and period-appropriate metal hardware.

Position the bureau against a light-coloured wall to create visual contrast, and style the glass display shelves with curated ceramics, books, or glassware. The compact drop-down desk surface allows it to serve as a functional home office space without overwhelming smaller rooms.

Preserve the timber by regularly dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year along the grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, warping, or glass leadwork deterioration.
