This Victorian jardiniere takes the form of a bulbous copper body paired with a polished brass rim decorated with studs. Cast brass lion mask handles adorn each side, and the piece stands upon three detailed claw feet. The combination of warm copper tones and golden brass creates a rich contrast, showing natural surface weathering from age. Measuring 18 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 20 cm deep, the bowl sits ideally upon a living room sideboard or hallway console to hold small houseplants or decorative arrangements. It suits traditional English country house interiors and adds a touch of period character to contemporary spaces alike.

FAQs

During the Victorian era, the cultivation of indoor plants and exotic ferns became popular, leading to a demand for decorative display vessels. Metalworkers produced jardinieres using copper and brass, incorporating revivalist motifs such as lion masks and claw feet to suit ornate period interiors.

Victorian planters were predominantly crafted from sheets of copper and brass, often joined with copper rivets. Decorative elements such as rim bands, footings, and side handles were frequently cast in solid brass or bronze for strength and contrast.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of manual craftsmanship, including hand-hammered surfaces, irregular copper rivets, and heavy cast brass fittings. Naturally acquired patina, mild surface oxidisation, and minor wear to the base further indicate historical age.

A metal jardiniere serves as a tactile focal point on a sideboard, fireplace hearth, or deep window sill. It can be paired with trailing houseplants or used as a standalone decorative vessel to introduce warm metallic tones into both traditional and contemporary spaces.

To preserve the existing patina, clean the surface using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid harsh chemical polishes or abrasive pads, and insert a plastic liner inside the vessel when housing live potted plants to protect the interior metal from moisture damage.
