This freestanding fireplace screen dates from the 1930 period and reflects an Edwardian design style. The piece consists of a polished gold-coloured brass frame with tubular vertical rails, topped by finials at each upper corner and supported by splayed feet at the base. At the centre, a rectangular hammered brass panel features an embossed design incorporating an oval medallion surrounded by a laurel wreath motif, with decorative scrolling foliage beneath. The item measures 77 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 21 cm deep, providing a practical barrier for a domestic fireplace hearth. In a contemporary home, the screen sits directly in front of an open fireplace or stove to contain stray sparks while adding a decorative focal point to the room when the fire is unlit.

Fire screens were introduced to protect occupants from the direct heat of open fires, prevent embers from damaging floor coverings, and conceal empty hearths during warmer months. In nineteenth and early twentieth-century homes, ornate brass fire screens also served as status symbols and key decorative focal points within living spaces.

These screens were primarily constructed using sheet brass mounted on iron or steel sub-frames for stability. The decorative panels were often embellished using techniques such as repousse, embossing, and hand-hammering, framed by cast or drawn brass tubework and finished with turned brass finials.

Authentic period examples display natural age-related oxidisation, micro-scratching, and wear around the feet and handles. Genuine pieces typically feature hand-riveted or threaded joinery rather than modern welding, alongside subtle imperfections in the repousse or hammered metalwork indicative of period manufacturing.

Position the fire screen directly in front of a working or non-working fireplace to anchor the hearth area. The warm metallic tones of brass contrast effectively against dark painted mantels, exposed brickwork, or modern stone surrounds, adding historical texture to contemporary living rooms.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that can strip natural patina or historical lacquer; unlacquered brass can be gently treated with a specialist metal polish applied with soft cotton wool to maintain lustre without removing character.
