This Georgian decorative plate originates from the 18th century, dating to circa 1790. Formed from creamware earthenware, the piece displays a pale cream ground complemented by a hand-painted red rim border and a matching red transfer-printed central motif. The decoration depicts a portrait medallion of William V of Orange encased in a radiating sunburst and positioned above a banner inscribed with Vivat Orange. Visible signs of age include light surface wear and a minor nibble to the outer edge, while the glaze exhibits natural speckling. Measuring 26 cm wide, the circular plate sits upright on a stand during display. In a modern interior, this antique piece serves as a decorative display item placed upon a sideboard top within an English country house setting. Collectors of historical ceramics position the plate on tables or within open shelving to showcase the portrait detail and contrasting red border. The earthenware body provides a traditional accent when integrated into period dining room schemes or classic entrance hall furniture arrangements.

FAQs

Creamware, perfected in England during the mid-18th century, became a favoured medium across Europe for producing decorative and political ceramics. Commemorative plates featuring transfer-printed portraits, such as those of William V, Prince of Orange, were crafted to mark political alliances, royal milestones, and public support during times of political change.

Creamware is created from refined earthenware clay mixed with calcined flint, fired to a cream shade, and sealed with a transparent lead glaze. Decorative designs were applied using copper-plate transfer-printing or hand-applied metallic oxide enamels, which fused into the glaze during a secondary firing process.

Authentic 18th-century creamware is notably lighter in weight than later Victorian ironstone or porcelain. Original examples typically feature subtle pooling of greenish or yellowish lead glaze around foot rims, minor hand-finishing irregularities, and fine glaze crazing consistent with natural aging.

A commemorative plate can be displayed on a plate stand atop a sideboard, dresser, or mantelpiece as a standalone historical accent. Alternatively, mounting multiple antique plates on a wall creates a curated gallery installation suitable for traditional and eclectic spaces alike.

Antique glazed earthenware should be dusted using a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Washing with water or harsh chemicals should be avoided, as moisture can seep through fine glaze crazing into the porous ceramic body, causing internal discolouration.
