This Victorian walnut Wellington chest is a nineteenth-century piece in the gentleman's library style. Constructed from burr walnut timber in a warm brown colour, the tall, narrow cabinet stands 107 cm high, 54 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. The body holds seven stacked horizontal drawers with dark turned wood knobs and straight mouldings, flanked by side pilasters decorated with carved leaf brackets at the top. A hinged locking bar secures the drawers down one side, while the base rests upon a flat plinth. Practical and compact, this traditional chest fits well in a bedroom, study, or hallway as a storage unit for small accessories, documents, or personal items.

Named after the First Duke of Wellington, a Wellington chest is a tall, narrow cabinet typically featuring seven drawers, designed originally to transport and secure documents or personal effects using a hinged side locking pilaster.

Victorian Wellington chests were predominantly constructed using solid woods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often finished with figured timber veneers, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and turned wood or brass knobs.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature a vertical side flap or pilaster that hinges to lock all drawers simultaneously, hand-crafted dovetailing inside the drawer construction, period keyholes, and subtle wear consistent with age.

Due to its compact footprint and tall proportions, a Wellington chest functions effectively as a bedside storage unit, a side cabinet in a narrow hallway, or an accent piece alongside desk furniture in a home office.

Maintain the timber by applying a clean beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the cabinet away from direct heat sources or damp environments, and applying graphite powder to the locking mechanisms if movement becomes stiff.
