Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1890s:

Hand-cut dovetails on the drawer sides: late Victorian cabinet making.

Incised tramline mouldings across the drawer fronts: popular late 19th-century styling.

Recessed brass handles fixed with slotted screws: original period hardware.

Natural shrinkage line down the side panel: aged solid timber.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Victorian chests of drawers are characterised by sturdy timber construction, often utilising walnut, mahogany, or oak, featuring practical drawer arrangements such as two-over-three configurations alongside turned or moulded detailing.

These pieces typically feature solid timbers or rich veneers including walnut, mahogany, and pine, constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints and fitted with solid brass drop or campaign handles.

Authentic Victorian chests usually display hand-cut dovetail jointing inside the drawers, original brass keyhole escutcheons, solid timber drawer linings, and natural wear patterns corresponding with 19th-century production.

A Victorian chest serves as a functional storage piece in a bedroom or hallway, paired with modern artwork, textured linen, or contemporary lighting to balance historical timber tones with modern elements.

Keep timber away from direct heat sources and harsh sunlight to prevent drying or fading, and clean periodically using a soft dry cloth followed by a high-quality beeswax polish.
