Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early 19th-century Danish bureau bookcase exemplifies Scandinavian country style through its functional two-piece silhouette and rustic farmhouse charm. Constructed from painted pine with metal hardware, the piece wears a terracotta red finish that shows gentle surface wear and a weathered, matte texture. The upper section comprises panelled double cupboard doors and moulded cornices, while the lower body incorporates a cylinder roll-top desk enclosing a fitted interior, accompanied by three graduated flush drawers fitted with key escutcheons, and flanked by slender turned column accents. The cabinet measures 201 cm high, 102.5 cm wide, and 55 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, this substantial storage unit serves as both a practical workspace and a display cabinet, functioning well in a home study, living room, or hallway. The cylinder roll-top opens to reveal compartments for correspondence and documents, whilst the lower drawers and upper cupboards provide versatile storage for books, linen, or household objects. The faded terracotta red paintwork brings warmth and a distinct regional character to neutral or traditional interior palettes, grounding the room with authentic period presence.

FAQs

A Danish bureau bookcase is a two-part storage and writing piece combining a lower chest or desk unitoften featuring a sloped or cylinder front over drawerswith an upper cupboard or bookcase section, traditional to 18th and 19th-century Scandinavian furniture making.

These pieces were typically constructed from durable softwoods such as pine or spruce, fitted with iron or brass lock plates and handles, and finished with mineral-based paints to protect the timber.

Authentic examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed back panels, natural wear around handles and keyholes, and layered paint finishes exhibiting subtle historical age and oxidisation.

Position the piece as a focal point in a living room, hallway, or home office, pairing its painted silhouette with neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and contemporary textiles to contrast the traditional framework.

Keep painted antiques away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage and paint flaking. Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes.
