Antique Tribal Shekarlu Rug 1.97m X 1.26m

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Rug Addiction
Description

A wonderful antique tribal rug woven by the Shekarlu tribe circa 1900. The Shekarlu are a small sub tribe of the Qashqai, known for their association to the sugar trade (Shekar is sugar in Farsi). Their rugs are quite distinctive from other Qashqai weaving and increasingly difficult to find. The border is classic Shekarlu (and almost identical to the rug that Sigmund Freud had on his couch!) along with the distinctive diagonal comb motifs on the field.

Size: 1.97m x 1.26m (6ft 6in x 4ft 2in)

This rug has light, age related wear, slightly heavier in a couple of areas (see photos). A few old repairs, sympathetically done (see photos). Fringes and selvedges are secure and it has been professionally cleaned.

Free worldwide shipping.

This antique tribal rug dates from around 1900 and represents the distinctive weaving style of the Shekarlu sub-tribe of the Qashqai, created using wool with a dark navy and red palette. The piece displays dense geometric motifs, diamond medallions, geometric flora, diagonal comb patterns, and a patterned ivory primary border enclosed by latch-hook edges, alongside visible signs of light age-related wear, sympathetic old repairs, secure fringes and selvedges, and short knotted fringes at either end. Measuring 197 cm high, 126 cm wide, and 1 cm deep, the carpet provides a substantial floor covering suited for placement within a traditional gentleman's library or study to add warmth and pattern underfoot.

Shekarlu rugs are woven by nomadic Qashqai sub-tribes in South Persia, recognized for their dense geometric motifs, vibrant primary colour palettes, and stylized representations of flora and fauna.

These rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and the structural warp and weft, coloured using natural vegetable and mineral dyes.

Authentic examples feature asymmetrical tribal knotting, subtle abrash colour variations from dye batch changes, a flexible wool foundation, and organic geometric design variations throughout.

A hand-knotted tribal rug grounds neutral room schemes by introducing rich texture, historical depth, and geometric contrast beneath mid-century, minimalist, or traditional furniture.

Vacuum regularly on a low setting without a rotating beater bar, clear liquid spills immediately using cold water with mild detergent, and rotate the rug periodically to distribute foot traffic.
