Antique Khamseh Large Tribal Rug Carpet Size. 302cm X 158cm.

19th century
Description

Circa 1880 or last quarter 19th century.

South west persia possibly the arab ghani, certainly an arab weaving of the khamseh confederation.

Full of tribal symbology with some very gracious recumberant bird motifs at rest almost like swans which I haven't encountered before in this format. With stylised tree of life, geometric motifs and other bird, peacock and animal motifs scattered about it. To the right side just below the central medallion is a tribal horse with a saddle on it in light red.

Good size at nearly 10 foot long. There is low even pile with some wear to the central ivory coloured medallion. Ends are good with blanket stitching to prevent losses. Side bindings renewed representing all the colours in the rug in typical arab fashion.

9 foot 11 inches by 5 foot 2 inches. 302cm X 158cm. At widest points. All wool construction. Fringes not measured in size. Weft threads dyed terracotta as is usual on earlier weavings from south west persia.

Ready to use. Wonderful tribal weaving.

Priced competitively £1995 gbp. U.k post £25.

Khamseh rugs were woven by the Khamseh Confederation, a tribal alliance formed in the 19th century in the Fars province of Southwestern Persia. These textiles reflect a blend of Arab, Turkic, and Persian weaving traditions, characterised by geometric pole medallions and repeating stylized animal or floral motifs.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp/weft foundation. Sourced locally, the wool was dyed using natural vegetable and mineral dyes, resulting in rich navy blues, terracotta reds, and ivory accents.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical or symmetrical hand-knotted weave on a wool foundation, often resulting in a soft, flexible handle. Look for distinctive motif designs such as stylized chickens or birds (murgh motif), geometric diamond pole medallions, and subtle colour variations called abrash.

A large tribal rug serves as an anchor in living areas or beneath dining suites, layering texture against modern oak or stone floors. The intricate geometric patterns provide contrast against neutral minimalist upholstery and complement rich wood furniture.

Vacuum regularly using suction only to avoid catching the hand-knotted pile with a beater bar. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth, use a rug pad underneath to prevent friction wear, and consult a specialist rug restorer for periodic professional cleaning.
