FAQs

Originating in eighteenth-century Britain, Georgian chests of drawers are characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and the prominent use of dense mahogany timber. They frequently feature clean architectural lines, graduated drawer arrangements, and distinct base designs such as bracket or splayed feet.

These pieces were primarily crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied over oak or pine carcass wood. Construction techniques typically included hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, cockbeaded drawer edges, brass oval drop handles, and solid dustboards fitted between the drawers.

Authentic Georgian chests usually feature hand-sawn drawer linings, irregular dovetail jointing, original lock mechanisms with brass escutcheons, and natural timber movement consistent with age. Smooth underside surfaces or modern uniform machine-cut screws indicate later reproductions.

A mahogany chest functions as a focal storage piece in a hallway, bedroom, or living space, balancing contemporary interiors with historic texture. Pairing the deep mahogany tones with muted wall palettes, natural linen fabrics, and modern ceramic vessels highlights its classical silhouette.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent moisture loss, timber warping, and finish degradation.
