The Sideboard is Sound but as you would expect with a piece of this age there are some dings and marks on the top, but it has a wonderful patina

This Victorian Renaissance Revival sideboard or dresser base is constructed from oak with a warm brown finish and polished brass drop handles. The plank top possesses a deep carved border above three frieze drawers, flanked by relief-carved cupboards and a central open recess or dog kennel, supported by figural putti pillars, lion masks, and Green Man motifs. Surface wear includes visible dings and marks on the top alongside a mature patina, while the structure remains heavy and sound. The dresser measures 97 cm high, 183 cm wide, and 61 cm deep. It functions as a substantial storage and display console in a traditional dining room or hallway.

FAQs

Carved oak furniture featuring the Green Man motif gained widespread popularity during the Victorian era, particularly during the 19th-century Gothic and Renaissance Revival movements. The motif itself dates back to ancient foliage mythologies and medieval ecclesiastical architecture, symbolising rebirth and nature.

These items were predominantly constructed from solid oak, utilizing traditional joinery techniques such as hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged mortise and tenon frames, and deep relief hand-carving. Secondary timbers like pine or softwoods were frequently used for drawer linings and back panels.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved depth and slight irregularities in the relief design, natural oxidisation on original brass hardware, and age-appropriate wear around handles and bases. Additionally, examine the drawer interiors for hand-cut dovetails and uneven thickness consistent with period sawing methods.

A carved oak sideboard serves as a focal point when placed against neutral or contemporary wall finishes to contrast the dark wood tones. Pairing the heavy timber with modern art, simple ceramics, or clean-lined metallic lamps balances the detailed historical carvings.

Regularly dust deep carvings with a soft bristles brush or microfibre cloth to prevent build-up. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the oak grain, and keep the item away from direct heat sources to avoid wood shrinkage or splitting.
