Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This antique Jacobean Revival sideboard dresser base comes in solid oak with a dark brown finish. The timber top has a moulded edge above two central drawers with carved borders and small round wooden knobs, flanked by cupboard doors decorated with carved arch panels. Carved caryatid figures adorn the front corners, while carved baluster supports and heavy bulbous turned front legs hold up the base over a low pot board shelf. Measuring 90.8 cm high, 169 cm wide, and 50.8 cm deep, this heavy-duty serving piece works well in a traditional dining room or hallway as a display surface and storage unit.

FAQs

A Jacobean style carved oak dresser base typically features solid oak construction, rich dark tones, and geometric or arcaded carvings. Originating in the 17th century and later revived in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, these pieces combine central drawer storage with side cupboards and often a low shelf known as a pot board.

Traditional antique oak sideboards were crafted using solid European oak, featuring mortise and tenon joints, hand-dovetailed drawers, and pegged construction. Decorative elements included hand-carved arch panels, gadrooned borders, and turned bulbous legs.

Authentic antique oak pieces show signs of historic hand-planing, irregular wear on wooden drawer runners, and natural shrinkage across wide timber panels. Examining the reverse and drawer undersides for hand-sawn wood marks and historic iron or wooden peg fixings also helps confirm age.

Integrate a carved oak dresser base into modern interiors by contrasting its dark tone and heavy carving against neutral wall paint or lime wash. Decorate the flat top surface with minimalist contemporary ceramics, oversized mirrors, or understated lamps to balance the historic wood carving.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and radiator vents to prevent the solid oak panels from drying out or splitting.
