Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian freestanding desk of Sheraton Revival style is constructed from mahogany and satinwood with a warm brown timber colour, incorporating a brass gallery top, bevelled mirror glass, original brass pull handles, and square tapered legs with spade feet. The upper section contains a breakfront arrangement with an arched mirror-backed recess, three shallow drawers, and a pair of satinwood-inlaid cupboard doors featuring floral marquetry decoration, while the writing surface rests above three frieze drawers with delicate stringing detail. The piece measures 137.5 cm high, 85 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this writing table functions as a refined writing desk or display surface in a study, library, or drawing room. The finished back allows placement in the centre of a room rather than strictly against a wall, making it a versatile focal point for traditional English country house interiors.

FAQs

Originating in eighteenth-century France, the bonheur du jour is a small writing desk characterized by a raised back section incorporating drawers, cabinets, or open niches. The form was widely adopted during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, often styled with neoclassical inlay and brass galleried tops for domestic drawing rooms.

Victorian writing desks were frequently constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, accented with intricate satinwood, boxwood, or rosewood marquetry. Decorative hardware often incorporated cast or stamped brass gallery railings, drop handles, and escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, variable timber shrinkage on rear panels, and hand-cut marquetry veneers. Original brassware usually displays subtle surface irregularities and natural oxidisation consistent with age.

A compact antique desk functions effectively as a focal point in a hallway, bedroom alcove, or study. Pairing the piece with contemporary task lighting and a streamlined modern accent chair creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Clean timber surfaces with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish annually to maintain hydration. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners on brass galleries and keep the furniture positioned away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping and veneer lifting.
