Description

Fine Late 19th Century Bronze Figure Signed Lemoyne

We are pleased to offer an impressive antique bronze figure of a classical youth signed Lemoyne to the rocky base.

The figure, confidently posed, stands barefoot, raising a laurel wreath in his right hand and holding a classical cup in his left — an allegory of Victory or Triumph. The modelling shows good anatomical detail, typical of the Beaux-Arts tradition.

The bronze retains its original dark brown patina with natural wear to the high points. Subtle casting lines are visible to the upper arms. Two small drill holes to the front of the base indicate where a title plaque was once mounted.

Dimensions: 59 cm high × 20 cm wide × 25 cm deep

Good original condition, with minor wear and small surface marks in keeping with age.

Declaration

Treasure Trove Worcester Ltd has dated this 19th Century Bronze Sculpture to the 19th Century.

This late 19th-century French bronze sculpture depicts a classical youth standing on an integral rocky base, presented in the Beaux-Arts style. Modelled with detailed anatomy, the figure wears draped classical garments secured with a belt around the waist, holding a raised laurel wreath in his right hand and a small cup in his left hand. The dark brown patinated bronze surface has subtle casting lines on the upper arms and two small drill holes on the front of the base where a plaque was formerly mounted. Measuring 59 cm high by 20 cm wide by 25 cm deep, this figurative piece sits on a substantial rectangular foundation. Positioned on a mantelpiece, this antique sculpture suits a gentleman's library or study interior. The youth is barefoot and posed in a confident stance, conveying themes of victory and triumph. The dark patinated finish shows natural wear to the high points, reflecting the age of the piece. The overall modelling integrates classical motifs such as organic drapery and naturalistic rock formations into the solid bronze form.

19th-century French bronzes are notable for their refined lost-wax or sand-casting techniques, detailed hand-chasing, and classical mythological or allegorical subject matter popularised during the Neoclassical and Academic art movements.

Bronze figures were typically created using either the lost-wax (cire perdue) process or sand casting, resulting in hollow metal statues that were subsequently hand-chiselled and finished with a chemically applied patina.

Authentic pieces exhibit refined surface detail, crisp casting lines, authentic age-appropriate patination, and often feature foundry stamps or artist signatures cast directly into or incised on the base.

A dark patinated bronze statue creates a focal point when positioned on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or within a minimalist bookshelf, where contrasting lighting highlights its sculptural silhouette.

To preserve the original patina, dust the bronze figure regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and periodically apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax to protect against oxidisation.
