This Neoclassical patinated bronze Grand Tour sculpture depicts a nude dancing faun with cymbals, originating from Italy around 1850. The dark brown metal figure stands in a dynamic dancing posture atop a rectangular plinth base, holding cymbals in each hand and pressing a scabellum under his right foot. The sculpture measures 33 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 13 cm deep. Placed on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library, the piece suits traditional and contemporary settings. The composition displays intricate anatomical detailing across the torso and limbs, with naturalistic facial features and horns characteristic of the classical figure. The smooth dark brown finish covers the entire sculpture, mounted securely on the matching dark rectangular base.

Grand Tour bronzes are 18th- and 19th-century scale replicas of classical Greek and Roman statues. Wealthy European travellers acquired these finely cast souvenirs while visiting historic sites in Italy, particularly Rome and Pompeii, as symbols of refinement and classical education.

These figures were typically produced using the lost-wax casting method (cire perdue) or sand casting, resulting in detailed anatomical precision. They were subsequently finished by hand chasing and coated with chemical or wax patinas to achieve deep brown, dark olive, or black tones.

Authentic pieces generally display crisp surface chasing, sharp detail in hand-finished features, and heavy casting rather than lightweight modern metal alloys. They often feature natural wear patterns on high points and may bear foundry marks or be mounted on traditional marble or bronze plinths.

Classical bronzes contrast effectively against minimalist backgrounds or contemporary cabinetry. Position the figure on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table alongside neutral textures and tailored lighting to accentuate the sculptural silhouette and patinated surface.

Dust the bronze regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a natural bristle brush. Avoid water, harsh chemical polishers, or solvents; instead, apply a sparse coat of microcrystalline wax once a year to protect the patina from moisture and handling oxidisation.
