An antique French bronze sculpture from the 1860 period depicts a female figure in classical drapery seated beside a winged cherub figure upon sculpted waves. The dark brown bronze shows fine casting details, including the folds of the garment, facial expressions, and the anchor held by the woman. The sculptural group rests upon an ebonised wooden plinth with a polished finish, serpentine shape, and thumb moulding along the edges. The piece measures 33 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 23 cm deep. Suitable for a neoclassical interior, this sculpture works well placed upon a sideboard top in a living room, hallway, or study. The dark metal finish and shaped wooden base provide a traditional French chateau aesthetic that complements classic room schemes. The work integrates easily into existing arrangements of decorative objects, bringing period character and figural detail to surface displays.

Nineteenth-century French bronze sculptures are recognised for classical subject matter, intricate drapery detailing, and cast allegorical figures created using lost-wax or sand-casting techniques.

These sculptures were typically cast in bronze alloy, finished with chemical patination, and mounted on carved wood, slate, or marble bases for stability and display.

Authentic period bronzes exhibit hand-chased surface details, expected wear patterns on raised surfaces of the patina, distinct foundry stamps or signatures, and substantial weight.

Position the piece as a central display element on a sideboard, desk, or mantelpiece, contrasting its dark finish against neutral walls or lighter timber surfaces.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and periodically apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax to protect the patination from oxidation.
