This nineteenth-century Black Forest sculpture presents a detailed group depicting two red deer positioned upon a rocky outcrop beside a branching tree motif. Hand-carved from lime wood and walnut, the large multi-figure study displays a rich dark brown colour throughout, complemented by realistic hand-carved fur detail across the animal forms. The naturalistic rocky terrain base supports the standing male deer and the lower crouching animal, alongside a gnarled tree branch standing upright beside them. The sculpture measures 58 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 32 cm deep. Suited for a highland hunting lodge design vibe, this carved wooden piece finds an ideal home displayed prominently on a mantelpiece in a traditional interior setting.

Originating primarily in Switzerland around the Brienz region, Black Forest carvings are recognised for detailed depictions of native wildlife, naturalistic foliage, and rustic themes carved by skilled craftsmen during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Artisans predominantly used native lime wood or walnut due to their fine grain and suitability for intricate detail, often finishing pieces with dark stains or polishes to enhance depth.

Authentic examples feature crisp hand-gouged tooling marks, realistic anatomical proportions, detailed textural carving such as fur or tree bark, and natural patination consistent with age.

These sculptural wooden objects serve as focal points when positioned on a mantlepiece, sideboard, or within a bookshelf, adding organic texture and historical interest to both classic and modern spaces.

Dust regularly using a soft dry brush to clear carved recesses, keep the item away from direct heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and apply a light coat of high-quality beeswax sparingly.
