96 X 616cm Fine Antique Kurdish 'Mina Khani' Long Runner

19th century
For Sale by James Cohen Antique Carpets (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

'Mina Khani' refers to the name of one of the best, and my favourite, designs. It is the repeat flowerheads connected by a leafy vine and no one does it better than the Kurds. In this early example, the flowers are beautifully articulated, with a strong sense of stirring movement within the field. A veritable and gorgeous Persian garden!

Superb colours of golden yellow, coral, light blue and various greens are set off to perfection on the midnight blue ground.

3'2" x 20'3"

Declaration

James Cohen Antique Carpets has dated this Antique Kurdish Mina Khani Runner to the 1860s.

This extra-long antique Kurdish runner rug originates from 1860 and exhibits a traditional tribal style. Woven entirely from wool, the rug displays a navy blue background accented by vibrant rust red, golden yellow, coral, light blue, and various greens. The design incorporates a repeating Mina Khani floral lattice pattern with circular rosettes and connected leafy vines, alongside a geometric multi-line border and stylised animal motifs. Hand-knotted construction is evident in the dense pile and fringed ends visible along the edges. The piece measures 96 cm by 616 cm in practical size. In a contemporary home, this runner fits well within an English Country House aesthetic, suitable for long hallways, spacious corridors, or expansive entryways where the generous length can be fully appreciated. The durable wool material stands up well to foot traffic while adding warmth and traditional character to wooden or stone floors. The rich palette of midnight blue and coral introduces a striking decorative element to interior spaces, enhancing surrounding architectural features with its historic pattern.

The Mina Khani motif is a traditional Persian pattern characterised by an all-over repeating grid or lattice containing large circular floral rosettes interconnected by smaller blossoms and vines, historically woven by Kurdish and North-West Persian tribes.

Traditional Kurdish carpets are typically hand-knotted using locally sourced, hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation (warp and weft), coloured with natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces feature a flexible hand-knotted wool foundation, slight colour variations known as abrash caused by hand-dyed wool batches, tribal motifs woven into the borders, and asymmetrical design elements.

Long runners are best positioned in entrance hallways, gallery corridors, or wide landing spaces where their linear proportion anchors the space while adding warmth and sound insulation over timber or stone floors.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar to protect the wool fibers, rotate the carpet annually to ensure even foot traffic distribution, and use a quality underlay to prevent slipping and wear.
