Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1870s:
Hand-spun wool in fine sumakh weft-wrapping: traditional tribal flat-weave construction.
Plant and insect dyes including madder and indigo: work before synthetic dyes became dominant.
Striped flat-weave reverse with matching overbound sides: an intact nomadic pouch.
Gentle softening and wear across the wool face: decades of light handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This antique Shahsevan nomadic vanity-bag dates from the second half of the nineteenth century and originates from the Moghan region of Azerbaijan. The small Caucasian tribal textile is hand-woven from wool in a flatweave technique featuring intricate geometric patterns. The front display panel showcases horizontal decorative bands filled with diamond medallions and geometric latch-hook motifs executed in rich multi-colour tones of red, blue, cream, yellow, and brown against contrasting white and dark backgrounds. Frayed fringe threads line the top edge, while overbound flatweave selvedges complete the structural borders on the left and right sides. Measuring 15 cm high and 19 cm wide, the rectangular pouch displays fine traditional craftsmanship suited to a variety of interior placements. In a modern British home, the piece works well displayed upright on a bookshelf or within a cabinet setting as part of a collected bohemian design scheme.

A Shahsevan vanity bag is a compact flat-woven textile pouch crafted by the nomadic Shahsevan tribes of the Moghan region in Azerbaijan, traditionally used to hold personal items, cosmetics, or mirrors during nomadic migrations.

These bags are typically hand-woven using hand-spun wool for both the warp and weft. Weavers utilise flatweave techniques such as extra-weft wrapping, slit-weave kilim, or soumak to create dense, durable patterns with natural plant-based dyes.

Authentic pieces feature geometric motifs, including hooked diamonds and step-edged polygons. They display characteristic colour palettes of saturated reds, deep blues, terracotta, and unbleached wool accents, along with fine hand-spun wool yarn construction.

A small flat-woven pouch can be professionally mounted and framed inside a shadow box to serve as textured wall art, laid flat on a coffee table tray, or styled standing upright on a bookshelf alongside vintage ceramics.

Display the textile away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading. Dust gently using a low-suction vacuum with a soft brush attachment, and keep in a climate-controlled room protected against moth damage.
