This Edwardian Carlton House desk, dating to circa 1900, is made from satinwood with a golden brown finish, complemented by an inset brown leather writing surface and brass hardware. The raised superstructure has a shaped gallery with pierced brass fretwork, six small drawers, a central cupboard, and two end cupboards with curved panels. Three frieze drawers are fitted with brass swan-neck handles, and the base rests on square tapering legs with brass castors. Marquetry inlay and striking oval veneered panels decorate the timber throughout. The piece measures 105 cm high, 135 cm wide, and 66 cm deep. Suitably sized for a home office, study, or library, this desk provides a functional workspace with multiple compartments and drawers. The arrangement of storage makes it practical for organising stationery and documents while serving as a prominent decorative fixture in a traditional room setting. The combination of figured wood, brass detailing, and classic proportions suits period interiors and classic interior design schemes.

A Carlton House desk is a distinctive design of writing desk originating in the late 18th century, characterised by a curved rear superstructure containing small drawers, cupboards, and letter boxes surrounding a central writing surface.

These desks were predominantly constructed from timber such as satinwood, mahogany, or rosewood, often featuring crossbanded marquetry inlays, a leather writing insert, and brass galleries and handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit era-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut dovetail joints, original cast brass hardware, subtle natural oxidisation of the timber, and hand-applied wood stringing or marquetry.

Position the desk in a home library, study, or light-filled window alcove paired with a classic armchair to create a functional dedicated workspace that complements both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement and fading, dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically while conditioning the leather inset.
