Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Inscribed date of 1747: painted for the commemorative occasion in period script.
Buff earthenware beneath the tin glaze: traditional English delftware potting.
Pinholes and bubbles across the reverse glaze: typical early kiln firing.
Cobalt blue trellis border: applied freehand in the prevailing mid-century style.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This 18th century Georgian marriage plate is tin-glazed earthenware decorated in blue and white with hand-painted cobalt oxide. The circular dish has a central foliate cartouche enclosing handwritten inscriptions that name Philip and Mary Smith, the date 1747, and the location Geldeston. An intricate diaper pattern border runs along the outer rim, complemented by small ribbon swags placed around the well. Minor edge chipping and glaze fretting are visible around the rim, reflecting the age of the ceramic. Measuring 22 cm high, 22 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, the dish works well displayed on a mantelpiece or shelf in an English Country House interior.

A Delftware marriage plate is a tin-glazed earthenware vessel decorated to commemorate a wedding, traditionally painted in cobalt blue glaze with the names or initials of the couple and the date of the ceremony.

These ceramics were formed from earthenware clay and coated with a lead glaze containing tin oxide, which created an opaque white surface. Hand-painted designs were applied using metallic oxide pigments before firing at high temperatures.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted brushwork with minor variations, an opaque tin glaze that often shows rim chips exposing reddish or buff clay underneath, and period-appropriate calligraphic styles.

Display the plate on an acrylic or wooden stand within a bookshelf, mount it on a focal wall among a curated plate gallery, or position it centrally on a mantelpiece alongside understated contemporary accessories.

Clean tin-glazed ceramics by dusting lightly with a dry, soft brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding water immersion and harsh detergents to protect unglazed clay areas and existing chips.
