Description

A stunning antique figured walnut chest on chest of drawers. This was made in England, we would date it from around the 1890-1910 period.

The quality is superb, this is a great size and offers lots of storage space, with a leather top pull out sliding shelf in the middle. There is a lovely moulded cornice, the drawers have fine, hand cut dovetailed joints, and this sits on bracket feet. The drawer fronts are cross banded, the front edges are grooved and canted, this has high quality brass handles and escutcheons.

We have had this re-polished to a very high standard, the condition is lovely for its age. There is a beautiful overall patina with various small marks and small signs of historical wear here and there.

The top lifts right off the base and this comes in two halves for ease of transport.

Width – 30 inches, 76 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A tallboy, or chest on chest, originated in the late 17th century during the Baroque period. It was designed to provide increased vertical storage capacity without occupying a larger floor footprint.

These pieces typically feature a carcase of soft wood such as pine or oak, veneered with highly figured timbers like walnut or mahogany. Traditional construction incorporates hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction and mortise and tenon joinery.

Authenticity is assessed by examining secondary woods, hand-cut dovetailing, patination of the timber, and the presence of period-correct brass hardware and lock mechanisms.

A tallboy serves as a statement storage piece in a bedroom or hallway, offering a contrast to modern minimalism through its rich grain and historical character.

Maintain antique wooden furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and occasionally apply microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
