This large mid-19th century Scottish Victorian chest of drawers is constructed from pine and finished in a warm brown original simulated mahogany scumbled paint. The piece comprises a hat drawer above two side drawers, over three graduated long drawers, and a hidden frieze drawer. Details include turned wooden knobs on the fruitwood pulls, turned pilasters flanking the front, and turned bun feet at the base, alongside visible surface wear and tear to the paint. The cabinet measures 122 cm high, 135 cm wide, and 60 cm deep. It provides substantial storage for a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway, serving as a practical surface for display items while housing clothing or linens in a home today.

Scottish chests of drawers from the Victorian era are characterised by generous proportions, deep central bonnet or hat drawers, turned pilasters, and distinct regional joinery traditions.

Scots pine was the primary timber used, frequently finished with scumbling or faux-graining techniques to imitate expensive hardwoods like mahogany or rosewood, constructed using dovetail joints.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, thick pine drawer linings, original turned wooden knob handles, original varnish or paint layers, and operational wear on drawer runners.

Position the chest against a modern neutral background, pairing the warm timber finish with clean-lined ceramic accessories or modern artwork to create balanced contrast.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly, avoiding chemical solvents, water, or abrasive polishes that strip original scumble glazes.
