Victorian Mahogany Chest of Drawers

19th century
For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

A fine quality Victorian mahogany chest of drawers by James Winter & Sons, circa 1860.

Of compact proportions and beautifully figured mahogany, the chest is arranged as two short drawers over three graduated long drawers, all retaining their original reeded handles and locks. The drawers are well made and mahogany lined, with the maker’s stamp present inside the top drawer. Finished with a moulded top, small raised upstand to the rear and a neat plinth base, this is a particularly attractive and well-crafted example of mid-19th-century English furniture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian chest of drawers refers to storage cabinetry produced in Britain during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901). Characterised by substantial proportions, dark hardwoods, and practical multi-drawer configurations, these pieces were designed for sorting household textiles and garments.

Primary timbers included solid mahogany, walnut, oak, and pine, with flame mahogany veneers frequently applied to front panels. Secondary timbers such as pine or deal were utilised for drawer linings and rear casing, joined using hand-cut dovetails.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints with narrow pins, original brass or turned timber knobs, iron locks, and secondary pine timber showing age-related shrinkage. The presence of a heavy plinth base or turned bun feet is also typical of mid-to-late 19th-century manufacturing.

Balance the deep warm timber tones by positioning the chest against modern muted backdrops like sage green, stone, or charcoal walls. Display contemporary ceramics or minimalist artwork across the top surface to create a balanced contrast between historic and current design elements.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying high-grade beeswax once or twice annually. Keep the furniture clear of direct heat sources like radiators to prevent veneer cracking or timber warp.
