Antique Farahan Carpet

19th century
Description

Since the 18th Century, Farahan carpets from between Arak and Kashan have ranked among the best decorative carpets and rugs in Persia.  The various mosaic designs of these rugs, of which there are around 20 variants compose of, the famous 'Herati' pattern, central motif designs, tree of life prayer designs and diamonds filled with rosettes.  The border designs are ornamented with angular palmettes, leaves, rosettes.  Colours tend to be light blue, purple/mauve tones, yellow or rare natural white ground.

This 150 year old Farahan has such character and sublime natural faded dyes, the muted red/pinkish border is a really wonderful contrasting colour with the deep blue almost black background it brings the old greens and light blues and pinks to the surface on the floral motifs. Some lower areas of pile, as you can see in the additional images, but still a strong and durable antique carpet, supplied with our anti-slip underlay.

This antique Farahan carpet from 1870 is a traditional Persian floor covering made from wool and cotton. The piece exhibits natural faded dyes with a dark navy blue central field decorated with intricate floral motifs and the Herati pattern, framed by a wide terracotta red patterned border ornamented with angular palmettes, leaves, and rosettes. Visible details include areas of lower pile showing age and wear, muted pinkish and light blue tones, and a dense, intricate geometric and floral design. The carpet measures 430 cm high, 346 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. Suitable for an English country house style interior, the rug works well in grand reception rooms, spacious living areas, or large studies to anchor the furniture arrangement. Placed on hardwood flooring or over wall-to-wall carpeting, the durable antique textile brings warmth, texture, and historical character to traditional or eclectic home schemes.

FAQs

Farahan carpets originated in central Persia during the nineteenth century, produced predominantly in the Arak region. They are distinguished by their fine hand-knotted construction, dense wool pile, and intricate all-over floral or Herati patterns framed by contrasting borders.

These carpets are constructed using a durable cotton warp and weft foundation with a hand-spun wool pile. The dyes are historically derived from natural plant and mineral sources, producing muted terracotta, navy, and indigo shades.

Authentic examples feature asymmetrical Persian knots visible on the underside, slight variations in hand-dyed yarns known as abrash, and natural wear patterns consistent with age. The foundation typically displays a tight weave with fine structural integrity.

A Farahan carpet functions as a grounding element beneath neutral contemporary seating or within formal dining rooms. Its complex geometric and floral pattern balances minimalist furniture and adds texture to hardwood or stone flooring.

Regular vacuuming without a rotating beater bar removes surface debris without damaging the fibres. Professional hand-washing by a specialist textile restorer is recommended, along with underlay padding to prevent slippage and localized wear.
