Antique Fereghan Carpet, Persian

19th century
Description

A stunningly beautiful rare yellow ground antique Fereghan carpet woven in the last 1/4 of the 19th century.  The design of connecting flowers with vines is quite exceptional using a variety of early dyes, delicate pale blues and greens and muted red tones.  The yellow background is a rare and exquisite colour to scheme around or with.  This oversize antique carpet is squarer than most in proportion and the wool pile is generally good with some low areas in places, but still extremely durable and useable.  A stunning large and decorative antique Persian carpet which would look magnificent in a drawing room or dining room.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire & all over the UK by appointment.  Please request a home visit to view this large antique Fereghan carpet in situ, we love helping customers or interior designers find the perfect carpet.

Fereghan carpets are generally one of two types, the first being a full field decoration of floral motifs based on Persian designs, most commonly with the geometric ‘Herati’ design.  The second has a full medallion, usually with a contrasting colour, the edge of which is surrounded by a zig zag or jagged border. The dyes have mellowed beautifully due to the carpets age allowing it to be placed in a drawing room or dining room with ease.

Date of Manufacture

Farnham Antique Carpets has dated this Antique Persian Fereghan Carpet to the 1880s.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Persian Fereghan carpet dates from 1880 during the nineteenth century. Woven from wool and cotton, the textile displays a cream ground filled with dense floral patterns, connecting flowers, vines, and Herati motifs in pale blues, greens, and muted red tones. A multi-banded red border frames the central field, complemented by indigo accents. The pile is generally good with some low areas in places, showing signs of age through mellowed dyes and wear. The carpet measures 500 cm high, 395 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. Suitable for an English Country House aesthetic, the rug works well as a floor covering in a drawing room or dining room. The room placement brings warmth and texture to large living spaces while accommodating traditional interior schemes. The durable wool construction provides practical everyday use underfoot.

FAQs

Fereghan carpets originate from the Farahan region in central Persia, recognized for their finely detailed all-over floral or Herati patterns and structured, multi-banded borders.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation, colored using traditional vegetable dyes.

Authentic examples feature short wool pile, precise knotting density, subtle tonal variation known as abrash, and classical Persian motifs such as the Herati pattern.

A patterned Persian carpet anchors a contemporary space by introducing visual texture, pairing seamlessly with simple neutral upholstery or classic timber furniture.

Vacuum gently without a rotary brush head, rotate the carpet periodically to ensure equal wear, and treat spills promptly with mild solution prior to professional cleaning.
