Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large antique Afghan kilim carpet dates from 1920 in a tribal style. Constructed from wool, it has a flatweave finish and a red colourway with three integrated white patches within the field. The piece displays a repeated geometric diamond pattern and fringed borders, alongside all-over minor wear and fraying to the tassels as expected from age, with no holes or damage. Measuring 1 cm high, 375 cm wide and 197 cm deep, it provides substantial floor coverage. A buyer places this carpet in a living room, bedroom or hallway to add texture and pattern to a interior space, bringing a traditional boho feel to the home.

FAQs

An Afghan kilim is a traditional flatweave textile crafted by nomadic and tribal weavers in Afghanistan, known for geometric patterns and dense construction. Unlike pile carpets, kilims feature a flat surface created by interweaving warp and weft strands.

Authentic Afghan kilims are handwoven using natural hand-spun sheep wool for both the warp and weft threads. Dyes derived from natural plant and mineral sources are traditionally used to achieve deep shades of red, navy, and cream.

Authentic pieces feature slit-weave tapestry construction, slight variations in hand-spun wool yarn width, and minor design asymmetry characteristic of handloom production. The reverse side displays the exact pattern and colour intensity as the front.

A large red kilim serves as an anchor in neutral or contemporary spaces, adding warmth and visual texture. Pairing it with mid-century wood furniture, neutral linen upholstery, or dark leather creates a balanced contrast between modern lines and traditional craft.

Routine maintenance requires suction-only vacuuming without a rotating brush bar to protect the flatweave structure. Spills should be blotted immediately with an absorbent dry cloth, and professional cleaning by a specialist textile restorer is recommended when required.
