Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian freestanding davenport desk dates from 1860 and takes the form of a compact writing cabinet constructed from warm brown burr walnut with brass fittings. The piece has a sloped writing surface inset with green leather, bordered by inlaid marquetry decoration, and includes an upper stationary compartment with a hinged lid. Four working drawers and four dummy drawers run along the side, fitted with small turned wooden knobs, while the front is crossbanded. The entire desk is raised on shaped platform supports equipped with original castors. Measuring 83 cm high, 54 cm wide, and 54 cm deep with a 70 cm height to the fall, this practical item works well in a traditional study, home office, or living room as a dedicated writing and storage station. Its compact footprint allows it to sit comfortably against a wall or in an open room layout, serving as a functional workspace while maintaining a distinct nineteenth-century aesthetic.

FAQs

A Davenport desk is a compact writing cabinet featuring an inclined writing surface resting above a central structure with a bank of side drawers, originally created in the late eighteenth century.

Victorian Davenport desks were frequently crafted using figure-grained hardwoods such as burr walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, often accented with marquetry inlay and leather writing surfaces.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, brass castors, natural variations in the timber veneer, and original locking mechanisms.

A Davenport functions efficiently as a compact study desk, a hallway accent piece, or an occasional writing station positioned within a living room corner.

Maintain burr walnut surfaces by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish annually, while avoiding direct sunlight and proximity to heat sources.
