This Victorian burr walnut credenza dates to 1870 and displays warm brown tones with intricate marquetry and boxwood, purple heart and satinwood inlaid detail. The shaped top with curved ends sits above a banded frieze and a central panelled cupboard door flanked by twin free-standing columns with ormolu Corinthian capitals. Two curved glass display doors open to reveal a shelved interior, and six turned ormolu-mounted feet support the base alongside original brass lever locks and keys. The piece measures 105 cm high, 176 cm wide and 48 cm deep. Positioned in a principal reception room or dining space, this credenza provides surface display utility and enclosed storage for books, tableware or decorative objects. The glazed curved ends and velvet-lined shelves present an organized display capacity, while the solid lower cabinet conceals contents from view. The warm timber grain and metallic mount accents suit formal interior schemes that benefit from mid-nineteenth-century British cabinet work.

FAQs

A Victorian burr walnut credenza is a decorative storage sideboard popularised in the mid-to-late 19th century, typically featuring a central panel door flanked by curved glass display sections, intricate marquetry inlay, and brass or ormolu mounts.

These pieces were crafted using burr walnut veneers laid over solid pine or oak frames, often adorned with floral or geometric boxwood marquetry, cast brass or ormolu mounts, and hand-blown curved glass panels.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass locks with keyholes, natural variations in the figure of the burr walnut veneer, and signs of age-related patination on the gilt-bronze or brass fittings.

Style the top surface with minimalist ceramics, modern artwork hung above, or low-profile table lamps to balance the elaborate wood grain and classical detailing with clean modern lines.

Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer lifting or fading, clean glass with a soft microfibre cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber.
